A Celebration of Color
Color is what first attracts us to Victoria Salvano's work, and color is what makes the artist smile when she talks about creating her watercolors. "I paint the world the way I see it, and that's how I see it," she explains.
Her paintings reveal a world full of bright, sometimes startling color.
Victoria boldly uses her instinctive sense of color. What initially appears to be a spontaneous burst of color turns out to be a careful layering and saturating of paint. Mediterranean blue, purple, burning pink, blooming yellow, orange, red: color embraces color.
Color asserts its own life before we even begin to recognize objects and places. Victoria has traveled and studied in Europe and the
Mediterranean. She returns to Venice and
Florence often in her paintings. It is where the color and the light seem just right. While she admits it is the sense of place she is after, the viewer finds much more evolving. Buildings, shops, and restaurants with open doors and windows invite curiosity; there is a feeling of expectation and anticipation. Something is about to happen- someone is about to arrive; night is about to fall; the shops are about to close. Open doors and windows, like cutouts or jack-o-lanterns, invite us to look beyond. Light and color create movement in the paintings and in our imaginations. Before we know it we are involved in a story. Details come into focus enriching the plot, filling the picture, and tempting us to stay in this place and in the moment just a little longer.
Born in Brooklyn, New York and raised in Lewiston, Maine, Victoria Salvano came to live in the suburbs of
Baltimore when she was a teenager. She received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from
Towson
University and worked as a portrait photographer before opening the Butler Gallery. The gallery now features
Victoria's paintings and prints along with the works of many other artists.
Victoria Salvano's work is available at Butler Gallery in Hunt Valley, Maryland
